Full answer

Apple’s tech specs for the MacBook Pro (14-inch, M5) (introduced 2025) list a 70W USB-C Power Adapter and a USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable (2 m) in the box, a 96W adapter as a configure-to-order option, and “Fast-charge capable with 96W or higher USB PD power source.” The MacBook Pro (14-inch, M5 Pro or M5 Max) specs (introduced 2026) list the 70W adapter with M5 Pro 15-core CPU (96W configurable) and the 96W adapter with M5 Pro 18-core CPU or M5 Max, with the same 96W-or-higher fast-charge line.

So a USB-C PD charger of 70W or more matches the lowest in-box adapter, and a 96W, 100W or 140W USB-C PD charger is the fast-charge class (Apple: up to 50% in around 30 minutes). Apple also says any USB-C PD adapter can charge the Mac, even one with higher or lower wattage than recommended — a lower one is just slower. MagSafe 3 and the Thunderbolt (USB-C) ports both accept charging. Older 14-inch models: MacBook Pro 14 M4 charger and the all-years MacBook Pro 14 charger hub. Method for any laptop: how to pick.

Fast charge (96W and up)

Fast charge on MacBook Pro 14 (M5 family)

Every 14-inch M5, M5 Pro and M5 Max tech-specs entry says “Fast-charge capable with 96W or higher USB PD power source.” Apple’s fast-charge article (102378) says 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models from 2021 or later can charge up to 50 percent in around 30 minutes, and for the 14-inch lists the 140W or 96W USB-C Power Adapter with either the USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable or a USB-C charge cable (or an Apple Studio Display / Studio Display XDR / Pro Display XDR, or a third-party display that can deliver 94W). Apple tested the 14-inch M5 and M5 Pro / M5 Max with its 96W adapter (Model A2166) and the MagSafe 3 cable (A2363).

The in-box 70W adapter on the base M5 and M5 Pro 15-core is the include class, not the fast-charge class. Apple doesn’t name third-party chargers; a 100W USB-C PD charger delivers more than the 96W Apple lists.
